How to Change Address on Your Driver’s License in Canada

After moving from a place, you need to change the address on your health card and your driving license. For a driving license change of address, there are some requirements you need to fulfill. To change your current vehicle license for one showing your new address, you need to visit a Service Ontario center.

An application form needs to be submitted for this purpose. A replacement fee might be charged if you don’t bring your current vehicle license yet wish to get another one. From the time the location changes, you should, by law, update your driver’s permit and vehicle license in 6 days or less. Your health card should be updated in almost  30 days or less.

How to Change Address on License?

There are different methods to update drivers license address that are given below: 

Online

  • You can update both your driver’s license and health card address online at the same time.
  • You’ll need your driver’s license number or registrant identification number and the issue date.

In-Person

  • If you can’t update online, visit your local ServiceOntario office.
  • For the health card, bring your photo health card or your red-and-white card.

By Phone

For BC Services Card or BCID address changes, call the relevant authorities for assistance.

Requirements to Change Driver License Address 

The following things will be required to get your Canadian driver’s license or vehicle permit address change: 

  • A completely new residential and mailing address is required. Your unit number, floor number, postal code, city, and province should also be mentioned. 
  • Your driving license number or your registrant identification number
  • The issue date on your driver’s license is also required.

What to Expect After Updating Your Address?

  • Driver’s Licence: Your new driver’s license with the updated address will arrive in the mail within 4-6 weeks.
  • Health Card: No new card will be mailed, as it doesn’t display the address. However, the Ministry of Health will have your new address on file.
  • Vehicle Permit: For vehicles, there is no delivery. You will need to visit a ServiceOntario location to exchange your old vehicle permit for a new one. If you don’t bring your old permit, a replacement fee may apply.
  • Cost: There is no cost to change address on driving license or health card.

Changing Your Address on Insurance

Make sure to update your insurance policy with your new address to ensure coverage is valid.

Important Notes

  • If you change your name or address, you must update your driver’s license and vehicle registration within 14 days.
  • If Canada Post has issued a postal code change notice, you can update your address without an additional fee.
